Blackhawks Baby Hat

My co-worker who is a huge Blackhawks fan is having twins, so i wanted to make her a Blackhawks hat.  I put together this pattern using an image of a hat I saw online plus added earflaps and a pompom.  I purchased the patch from etsy and sewed it on.

Size: 0-6 months
Circumference: 14-1/4"
Materials: Worsted or aran weight yarn.  I used Debbie Bliss Rialto Aran, just because I have a ton of it.  Colors: White, black, and red

Needle size: US #7 dpns

Notions: 4 stitch markers

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4"

Instructions
Cast on 8 stitches in black and divide between 4 dpns.  Join to work in the round

Rnd 1: Kfb around: 16 sts
Rnd 2: K2, place marker, K2 on each of the four needles.
Rnd 3: (Knit to marker, m1, sm, k1, m1) 4 times, knit to end of the round: 24 sts
Rnd 4: Knit around until hat measures 4-1/2"
Knit 2 rows of K2P2 in white
Knit 2 rows of K2P2 in black
Bind off 28 sts in pattern, knit to end of the round, pick up and knit one st from bound off edge: 37 sts

Now working the rest of the hat flat (not in the round).  Slip the first stitch of every row for clean edges.

(in black) Next row (WS): P2tog, complete row in pattern: 36 sts
Next row: Work 11sts in rib pattern, bind off next 14 in rib pattern, Work 10 sts in rib pattern

Right earflap: (each color will be used for 2 rows)
Row 1: Take white yarn and make a slip stitch on right needle.  P2tog, then P to end of the row (11 sts)
Row 2: Slip first stitch, knit to end of the row in white
Row 3: Take red yarn and make a slip stitch on right needle.  P2tog, tuck in white yarn for one st, then P to end of the row
Row 4: Slip first stitch, knit to end of the row in red.  Cut red yarn and weave in loose ends
Row 5: Switch to white yarn and P one row
Row 6: K2togtbl, K7 sts, K2tog
Row 7: Take black yarn and make a slip stitch on right needle. P2tog, tuck in white yarn for one st, then P5, P2tog
Row 8: K2togtbl, K3, K2tog in black.  Cut black yarn and weave in loose ends
Row 9: Switch to white yarn, P2tog, P1, P2tog
Bind off remaining stitches.

Left earflap
Start with WS facing and repeat as for right earflap

Finishing
Cut nine 18" loose strips of yarn, fold in half.  Slip a crochet hook through earflap from inside of hat to outside and pull loop through.  Slip loose ends through loop and pull tight.  Braid strands tightly in groups of six.  Knot off and trim.  Mine ended up being 5-1/2" long, but it can go longer.  Make a pom pom for the top and sew it on.  I used the Clover Pom Pom maker in light green to get this size.  Sew on the Blackhawks patch to the front - my patch is 7 cm x 6 cm (2.75" x 2.5").  The front side is the shorter than the back side.
