Back from Spring Break

Bonjour! I've just returned from my Spring Break to Belgium. I met up with Karen and Jay there (she was at a business meeting), and we hung out in Brussels, Antwerp, and Brugge. This was my first trip to Europe ever, and what better way to break the ice than to go to the chocolate capital of the world. Sorry Hershey, Pennsylvania.

I left on my birthday (btw, thanks for all the birthday wishes everybody) and made it to Brussels the next morning. By the time I landed, it was 10AM Brussels time, 4 AM Chicago. But with the promises of mussels from Brussels, I sucked it up and headed to city. I had my pot of mussels and frites (mmm french fries) while it hailed outside. Yep, I said hailed. We went sight seeing at the Grand Platz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy1P3LHQDwI), saw the Mannekan Pis (yay!) and had waffles. Waffles in Belgium are not like they are here. They're not for breakfast, they're a snack. And you don't pour anything on it because it's already gooey inside. We also walked around the city looking for vintage shopping for Karen and got to see a lot of the architecture.

The next day was Karen's conference, so me and Jay went to play in Antwerp. We walked through a shopping district. It felt like a fairy tale. We went sightseeing at the Kathedraal and some of the other castles. Actually, it'd be an understatement to say castles because everything around looked like a castle. Can you imagine seeing an H&M on the first floor and castle architecture on the higher floors? I also tried Kriek beer for the first time in Antwerp. It's a Belgian sour cherry beer that tastes like candy!

Then we took off for the weekend in Brugge, the chocolate city of Belgium. We went on some major sightseeing. The town is twisted with several canals. We took a tour bus, a buggy ride (with Axel and Ginfess), and toured the Chocolate Museum, the St. John's Hospital, and Brugge's only brewery De Halve Maan. Jay decided to climb up the stairs of the Belfry too and saw the clock strike 4. We also had lots of chocolate and pralines, though I didn't really like Flemish food. We had some fresh hot chocolate made with actual bits of chocolate. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryOQztlWQAY. We also saw some ducks mating and two white birds in trees mating. Spring is here!
